Photonic Molecules and Spectral Engineering
نویسندگان
چکیده
This chapter reviews the fundamental optical properties and applications of photonic molecules (PMs) – photonic structures formed by electromagnetic coupling of two or more optical microcavities (photonic atoms). Controllable interaction between light and matter in photonic atoms can be further modified and enhanced by the manipulation of their mutual coupling. Mechanical and optical tunability of PMs not only adds new functionalities to microcavity-based optical components but also paves the way for their use as testbeds for the exploration of novel physical regimes in atomic physics and quantum optics. Theoretical studies carried on for over a decade yielded novel PM designs that make possible lowering thresholds of semiconductor microlasers, producing directional light emission, achieving optically induced transparency, and enhancing sensitivity of microcavitybased bio-, stress-, and rotation sensors. Recent advances in material science and nano-fabrication techniques make possible the realization of optimally tuned PMs for cavity quantum electrodynamic experiments, classical and quantum information processing, and sensing. 16.

Whispering gallery mode hybridization in photonic molecules
This work takes inspiration from chemistry where the spectral characteristics of the molecules are determined by hybridization of electronic states evolving from the individual atomic orbitals. Based on analogy between quantum mechanics and the classical electrodynamics, we sorted dielectric microspheres with almost identical positions of their whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances. Using th...
متن کاملSymmetric photonic molecules formed from coupled microspheres
Coherent coupling of optical resonances in spherical microcavities results in the formation of so called photonic molecules. The name originates from the analogy to chemical molecules. The coupled optical modes are similar to the atomic orbitals of a chemical molecule. In this work, we studied the resonance spectrum of the symmetric photonic molecules. Furthermore, symmetric directional emissio...
متن کاملDesign of Photonic Crystal Polarization Splitter on InP Substrate
In this article, we suggested a novel design of polarization splitter based on coupler waveguide on InP substrate at 1.55mm wavelength. Photonic crystal structure is consisted of two dimensional (2D) air holes embedded in InP/InGaAsP material with an effective refractive index of 3.2634 which is arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The photonic band gap (PBG) of this structure is determined using t...
متن کاملSpectrally Selective Infrared Absorption Enhancement in Photonic Crystal Cavities
Infrared photodetectors with spectrally selective response are highly desirable for applications such as hyper-spectral imaging and gas sensing. Owing to the ability of photonic density of states modification and dispersion engineering, photonic crystals appear to be one of the most promising platforms for infrared photodetectors with spectrally-selective absorption enhancement. We report here ...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Molecules Obtained from Marijuana: Computational Study of Spectral, Structural and Docking
There are many chemical molecules whose names are Cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidol (CBD), cannabichromene (CBC), tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), cannabigerovarinic acid (CBGV) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) derived from Marijuana. Theoretical methods were used to compare the chemical and biological activities of the six major molecules. Molecules were compared with their chemical activities using m...
